Speculations about Eid holidays mount

August 10, 2012

With ten days until Eid, the feast that marks the end of Ramadan, Kuwaitis have started speculations about the length of the upcoming holidays.

Under the regulations set by the Civil Service Commission (CSC), the Eid holidays last three days and initial speculations is that they will be from Sunday, August 19 until Tuesday, August 21.

However, Kuwaitis are hopeful that the CSC would, upon a recommendation from the cabinet, include Wednesday and Thursday in the holidays.

The inclusion of the two days would allow the public sector employees to enjoy nine days of rest, from the start of the August 17 weekend until August 26, local Arabic daily Al Rai reported.

A CSC official, quoted by the daily, said that no decision has been made yet about the length of the Eid holidays.

“So far, it is five days. The two day weekend and the three Eid days,” the unnamed source said.

A nine-day holiday would be used by several Kuwaitis to make plans to travel either to nearby destinations in the Gulf, mainly Dubai and Bahrain, or to other cities in the Far East.

Regular travel destinations in Lebanon, Syria or Egypt have either been ruled out or become less popular due to the unrest in the region and safety concerns.

According to local travel agencies, Dubai has remained the top destination for summer travel, followed by Malaysia and Turkey.

London is still popular in Europe although European cruises have also gained a lot of interest from Kuwaitis, they said.
