Kuwaiti sisters, 3 and 6, drown in Slovakia pool tragedy

September 6, 2012

Two Kuwaiti sisters, aged three and six, have drowned in Slovakia where they were on holiday with their family.

The sisters were reportedly chasing each other around the main swimming pool in the Aquathermal Aqua Park in Senec when they accidentally fell in the water and drowned, reports from Slovakia said.

According to TV Noviny, resuscitation efforts by a doctor failed to revive either of the two sisters.

“It is a tragedy that children remain unattended in this manner,” a doctor was quoted as saying.

The parents were reportedly in the pool cafeteria and no details were given as to why the two girls were not supervised.

Aquathermal Senec Chief Oskar Gaál said that the park company would fully cooperate in the investigation.

“Our company expresses deep sympathy to the whole family,” he said, quoted by TV Noviny. “It is a big tragedy. Nothing similar has happened in our facilities in the last eight years.”

The park, close to the capital Bratislava, is promoted as a “recreation and relaxation water world” that has eight pools available all year round with five pools added during the summer season.

Slovakia is one of the European countries now favoured by Gulf citizens keen on medical packages and relaxation.

Last year, Slovakia and Kuwait agreed on closer co-operation in the health sector.

Kuwait said that it looked forward to using Slovak doctors’ expertise, especially in the fields of cardiology and oncology. While Slovakia expressed interest in attracting Kuwaiti investors to the sector.

On Monday afternoon, tragedy struck the family of Tawfiq Al Rabe’ei, the Saudi minister of commerce and industry, when his son Saud, seven, drowned in a swimming pool.
