Jail terms reduced for Bahrain former teachers’ association leaders

Bahrain’s appeals court on Sunday halved the sentence against Mahdi Abu Deeb, the former head of the teachers’ association, from 10 to five years in prison. The court also reduced the jail term of Abu Deeb’s deputy, Jaleela Al Salman, from three years to six months.

Saudi Arabia extends Haj deadline to Tuesday

People planning to perform pilgrimage (Haj) have until Tuesday to be near or in Makkah, the Saudi interior ministry said. The deadline is an extension of a past date limit to allow foreigners and Saudi nationals into the Makkah perimeters for the annual rituals.

Kuwait parliamentary election set for December 1

Kuwait’s cabinet on Saturday drafted a decree that would amend the controversial electoral law by reducing the number of candidates a voter can elect from five to only one. The draft, to be submitted to the Emir for endorsement, kept the number of constituencies to five as stipulated in the 2006 law.

Bahrain lawmakers object to US envoy’s “sway”

Bahrain’s parliament has endorsed a motion to request the government to put an end to “the interference of the US ambassador in the country’s domestic affairs”. The motion, filed by six lawmakers, also called for the government to step in to end the ambassador’s “frequent meetings with provocateurs”.

Lawmakers push for automatic car driving tests

Bahrain’s lawmakers are pushing for the adoption of driving tests in automatic transmission cars. A motion filed by lawmakers to allow learners to be tested in non-manual gear cars has been endorsed by a parliamentary committee and will be debated by the parliament at a session soon.

Probe launched into Twitter insult of Bahrain king

An investigation into reports four people insulted the king on their social network accounts has been launched, Bahrain’s public prosecution said. The reports were issued by the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security, Ahmad Bucheeri, the head of the Public Prosecution, said.
