Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) has called upon students interested in the Undergraduate Research Experience Programme (UREP), a research-funding programme, to submit their proposals online through the QNRF website

The proposals of the 13th cycle of UREP will undergo a vetting process by their institutions prior to being evaluated by three independent peer reviewers who are established experts in their fields, the Fund said in a statement emailed to Gulf News.

Proposals will be accepted from faculty members until October 18 and, as in previous cycles, the winning proposals will receive a grant from Qatar National Research Fund to carry out their research proposal.

UREP seeks to create “a broad array of research opportunities for undergraduate students in Qatar’s educational institutions.”

Launched in October 2006, UREP has since seen the completion of 12 successful cycles during which 1,386 proposals were submitted for consideration.

“Of these, 602 grants, with total sum of $17.9 million, have been awarded to 1,859 undergraduate students to carry out their research projects.

Engineering and technology grants topped the list with 203, followed by medical and health sciences with 160 and natural sciences with 106.

Social sciences had 88 grants, humanities 39 and agricultural sciences six.

QNRF said that the launch of UREP 13th cycle reaffirms its commitment to promoting a philosophy of “learning by doing”.

“Through this dynamic programme, QNRF encourages undergraduate students to unleash their research potential. With two cycles in a year, UREP endeavours to enhance the learning experiences of undergraduate students by encouraging faculty members to integrate students into their ongoing scholarly and professional activities.”

QNRF, a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, says it is dedicated to building research capacity and creating a vibrant research culture in Qatar.
