Gulf Air CEO resigns

Samer Majali

Gulf Air’s board of directors said that it has accepted the resignation of Samer Majali, the company’s chief executive officer.

Majali who handed in his resignation following the appointment of the board in mid-November, will remain in his position until the end of 2012.

Majali, a Jordanian national who also served Jordanian Airlines CEO, joined Gulf Air in 2009 and introduced a restructuring plan to ensure the ailing company’s long term future and success.

In 2010 the airline made progress towards commercial sustainability, significantly cutting costs, increasing revenue and reducing operating losses by over BD50 million despite a difficult operating environment characterised by high-fuel costs and increased competition, the company said in a statement.

However, the combination of local and regional developments and global economic pressures in 2011 disrupted the airline’s financial targets.

Despite this setback significant milestones were achieved across its customer product and service offering.

The new board of directors, appointed following strong pressure from lawmakers, thanked Majali for “his contribution to Gulf Air and the strong leadership he has shown over the last three years.”

It said that it “noted in particular the significant improvements made across the airline specifically in the areas of fleet renewal, service enhancement, operational efficiency and on-time performance.”

The board also “recognised Majali’s achievement following the successful renegotiations of the airline’s order book resulting in the reduction of the long-term financial liability of the airline by approximately 50.”
