Bahrain ready to host GCC Summit – BNA

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit to be held in Bahrain on Monday and Tuesday comes at a critical time for the region, the GCC secretary general has said. “The 33rd GCC summit convenes under highly sensitive and critical circumstances that require the member countries to study their impact on the Council’s progress in order to protect the numerous achievements accomplished in favour of their citizens,” Abdul Lateef Al Zayani said. The GCC was founded in 1981 in Abu Dhabi and groups Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Al Zayani said that the GCC foreign ministers would convene in the Bahraini capital on Sunday to finalise the agenda for the summit that includes joint work on political, social and economic matters, follow up reports and the latest regional and international political developments, he said in a statement ahead of the pan-Gulf gathering. The GCC chief expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia, the host of the GCC summit in 2011, and commended its “significant and effective” role under the leadership of King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, in moving the GCC joint work forward. He also expressed confidence in the support that the GCC would receive from King Hamad Bin Eisa Al Khalifa, the chairman of next week’s summit. The GCC summits are held annually in December according to a rotating system based on the Arabic alphabet.

However, the GCC leaders have been holding largely informal advisory summits in May in the Saudi capital Riyadh.
