Teacher praised for attending ex-student’s Saudi Arabia wedding

January 10, 2013

Saudis have heaped praise on a Canadian teacher who flew from her country to Saudi Arabia to attend the wedding of her former student.

The teacher participated in the Saudi traditions of Jezan in southwest Saudi Arabia near the border with Yemen, wearing local casual and wedding dresses and applying henna on her forearms and hands, Sabq news site reported.

The groom who had studied in a Canadian university on a Saudi scholarship sent the invitation to the teacher, although he was not sure she would be able to attend.

“That was very nice of her. The visit should give her invaluable insights into our culture and traditions, especially in the southern part of the country,” a blogger called Feelings posted.

Kankan, another blogger, hailed her trip as “a great gesture by a person who truly appreciates the meaning and significance of friendship and universal values”.

For Salloom, the Canadian teacher showed “impressive compassion that several men who knew the groom and lived in Saudi Arabia might not possess”.

Other online users complimented the groom on his character, writing that it had left a positive impression on the Canadian teacher who braved several elements to reach his family and attend the wedding celebrations.

The distance between the Saudi capital Riyadh and the Canadian capital Ottawa is around 10,300 kilometres.
