A Kuwaiti policeman was injured and needed hospital treatment as protesters hurled stones and incendiary devices at the security servicemen attempting to restore order in a residential neighbourhood, the interior ministry said.

In a statement condemning the attacks, the interior ministry on Wednesday said that protesters caused havoc and panic by setting rubbish containers in residential areas ablaze.

“An illegal rally was staged on Tuesday evening,” the ministry said in a statement. “The demonstrators moved through several streets in the Sabahiya area and reached Al Manqaf Roundabout. They blocked the road, disrupted traffic and stalled people’s interests. Their illegal acts undermined security in the residential area and scared people, especially after putting rubbish containers on fire,” the ministry said.

Efforts by the security servicemen to persuade the protesters to put an end to their irresponsible and unlawful acts failed, the statement said.

“They ignored the calls and cut off the main roads. They also attacked security servicemen and hurled stones and firecrackers at them. A policeman was injured in the head and had to be taken to hospital for treatment,” the ministry said.

According to the statement, the security agencies adopted tactics to avoid direct contact with the demonstrators and protect them.

“The security servicemen eventually controlled the situation and restored security in the area,” the ministry said.
