Man to remain in jail until forgiven by own mother

March 1, 2013

A court in Saudi Arabia has ruled that a man will remain in jail until his old mother whom he had physically assaulted forgives him.

The prisoner will also be given 200 lashes for abusing his mother and breaking her arm, the court in the Red Sea city of Jeddah said.

According to the case papers, the mother approached the police to complain about her son, saying that he had beaten her up several times and that he had broken her arm. She presented a medical certificate supporting her claims, local Arabic daily Okaz reported on Tuesday.

The mother wept during the court session, but she said that she needed the authorities to discipline her son, who is in his 30s, for causing serious trouble in the family and threatening her life.

The suspect admitted that he beat his mother when she was interceding in favour of his sister.

The daily said that the prosecutor asked for the toughest penalties possible to deter the son and other people from abusing or challenging their parents.

The lashing will be carried out over ten times and will be in public areas, mainly near the general markets, the court said.

The Saudi court seemingly based its ruling on the premise that Islam, like all major religions, stresses the sanctity of obeying parents’ will as long as it is in accordance with that of God.
