A festival in a Saudi Arabia is attempting to enter the Guinness Book of Records by creating the world’s largest floral carpet, the head of the organising committee has said.

“We are working on using the seventh Flowers and Gardens Festival in Yanbu to set a record for the largest carpet of lowers in the world,” Yousuf Al Hujaili said.

The carpet in the city located on the shores of the Red Sea will have an area of over 7,000 square metres and will use more than two million flowers, he said in remarks published by local Arabic daily Al Watan on Thursday.

“All the flowers are natural and the carpet patterns illustrate the history of the city since it was established. The floral artists are using 19 different flowers to create a magic carpet of art, beauty and colours,” he said as the festival was opened this week.

Al Hujaili said that promoting environment awareness and developing aesthetic tastes were among the aims of the festival opened on Tuesday.

The festival is scheduled to run until March 8.
