Kuwait court adjourns Al Barrak’s trial

March 16, 2013

A court in Kuwait on Monday adjourned the trial of former lawmaker Musallam Al Barrak to March 25.

The court said that it was putting off the case to hear the testimony of one of the witnesses who did not show up.

Al Barrak has been put on trial on charges of undermining the status of the emir in a speech he delivered in October.

In a separate case, a court ordered the release of Zayed Al Zayed, the publisher of Al Aan news website, and put off his trial to April 22.

Al Zayed was sentenced by a lower court to one month in prison in a libel case after he was found guilty by the lower court of defaming Abdul Mohsin Al Midaj, a member of the Kuwait Investment Authority and a member of the political office of the Democratic National Coalition.

In his article Al Zayed criticised Al Midaj, a former lawmaker and a former minister, for holding a forum to defend the use of public funds while skirting simmering issues relating to the country’s sovereign wealth fund.

In Bahrain, a court on Monday acquitted Yousuf Al Muhafdah on charges of spreading false information on his Twitter account.

The blogger, who was arrested in December, had maintained throughout that his account had been hacked and that he did not post the information for which he faced legal action.
