Kuwait’s Emir Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah has rejected the education minister’s resignation over the death of a student, particularly as reports indicated that the child died of natural causes.

Dr Nayef Al Hajraf last week submitted his resignation, saying that he was assuming responsibility in his political capacity after Noora, 11, died in her classroom at Sabah Al Nasser middle school.

Reports said that Noora, a sixth grader, suddenly collapsed in the classroom and was rushed to hospital, but died before the medical staff could do anything. Al Farawniya Hospital sources said that there were no traces of violence or bruises on her body.

Al Hajraf said that the Emir told him that his resignation was not accepted and that he would continue his work as minister.

The minister later attended the weekly cabinet meeting and expressed gratitude to all those who supported Noora’s family following the tragedy that struck them, Kuwaiti media reported.

He also thanked those who stood by the ministry and the victim’s school.

Al Hajraf explained to the ministers the measures taken by the ministry to reinforce medical preparedness in all schools and ensure the safety and well-being of the students.
