Bahrain will next month put a senior policeman on trial for his alleged role in the death of a demonstrator, the head of Bahrain’s public prosecution and head of the investigation unit said.

“The investigation into the death of Salah Abbas Habib Mousa on April 19, 2012 in the Shakhoora area, is now over,” Nawaf Abdullah Hamza said on Monday. “A senior policeman from the Special Forces unit will be tried by the high criminal court in the death case and the trial will open on May 6.”

The court last month sentenced two policemen to 10 years in jail each for their role in the 2011 death by torture of Eisa Ebrahim Saqr, a demonstrator.

The investigation unit head said that two new probes were opened in March following complaints of abuse.

“The unit also started looking into other complaints and listened to seven plaintiffs and 13 witnesses. It also commissioned doctors to assess the causes and dates of injuries and quizzed four public security servicemen in other cases,” the prosecutor said.

The interior ministry has regularly pledged to prosecute all personnel found guilty of abusing their authority.
