A Kuwait court on Sunday sentenced former lawmaker Waleed Al Tabtabai and five fire brigade employees to two years in jail on charges of storming a building.

However, the court said that it was suspending the sentence for a period of three years on a 1,000 dinar (Dh12,791) bail.

“Thank God, the ruling was not tough,” the ex-MP said. “The whole issue does not call for any punishment. It was just taking a stance in solidarity with the firemen who needed support,” he said, quoted by local news site Sabr.

The lawsuit was filed by Jasem Al Mansouri, the head of the fire directorate, against the defendants for reportedly storming the building and staging a sit-in to demand more rights related to their work.

They all denied the charges during the investigation and said that their protest had been peaceful and that it did not affect the work routine.

A seventh suspect was acquitted by the court.
